U.S. ARMY 504TH MILITARY INTELLIGENCE BRIGADE UNIT CREST (DUI)

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. Current regulations do not permit the DUI to be worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Enlisted personnel wear the insignia centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The 504th Military Intelligence Brigade Unit Crest was originally approved for the 504th Army Security Agency, a forebear in the Brigade’s lineage, on 7 June 1976. It was then approved for the 504th Military Intelligence Brigade on 1 April 1986, but was redesignated for the 504th Battlefield Surveillance Brigade on 16 March 2008; it was reverted back for the 504th Military Intelligence Brigade on 16 September 2015.

Military Intelligence branch colors of silver gray and oriental blue are used for the text of the inscription “SEMPER PRAEPARATUS” (Lain for “Always Prepared”) and the scroll on which it is written, respectively. Blue is the color of loyalty in heraldry; gold is included to denote accomplishment. A pair of wings alludes to achieving great height as a perspective for visual surveillance. The vertical lightning flash and checkerboard background refer to technological prowess and capabilities, and in tandem they reflect ever-watchful leadership, swift response, and high-speed communications. They also refer to the Brigade’s focus on strategic control of hostile communications and the safeguarding of friendly communications.

Together, the demi-fleur-de-lis, flash, wings, and checkerboard also recall the line of the organization when it was constituted in 1942 as the 137th Signal Radio Intelligence Company,  Aviation, and the demi-fleur-de-lis also serves as a symbol of the unit’s participation in the Northern  France, Central Europe, and Rhineland campaigns. The scarlet color is a reference to the Meritorious Unit Commendation Streamer inscribed “EUROPEAN THEATER” the unit earned during World War II.
