U.S. ARMY 437TH MILITARY POLICE BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

Green and yellow, the branch colors of the Military Police Corps, dominate the Distinctive Unit Insignia of the 437th Military Police Battalion. Green area represent regions with heavy foliage, such as mountain and jungles; wavy white and blue bars simulate water; and the rising sun is an allusion to the islands where the unit served in the Eastern Mandates and Western Pacific campaigns in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater of World War II. The sun is also an emblem of vigilance, while the unsheathed sword denotes readiness to provide protection and guidance under the law. "Protectors Of Peace" is the unit motto.

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The 437th Military Police Battalion was originally constituted as the 177th Coast Artillery Battalion in the Army of the United States on 19 May 1944. It took part in two campaigns between its 31 May 1944 activation and subsequent inactivation on Guam in January 1946. Following redesignation to the 177th Antiaircraft Artillery Gun Battalion and allotment to the Ohio Army National Guard on 1 March 1951, the unit was organized and Federally recognized two months later with its Headquarters at Youngstown. On 1 October 1951, it was redesignated as the 177th Antiaircraft Artillery Battalion until 1 September 1959 when it was reorganized and redesignated as the 2nd Gun Battalion, 137th Artillery, a title it held for just three years before it was reorganized and redesignated as the 2nd Automatic Weapons Battalion137th Artillery on 15 April 1962.

It would finally be designated as a Military Police organization on 15 February 1968 when it was converted and redesignated as the 437th Military Police Battalion, with a subsequent reorganization of Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment (HHD) on 1 February 1972 as HHD, 437th Military Police Battalion and the rest of the Battalion’s units starting new lineages from that point forward.

Called into active Federal service in 2013, the HHD, 437th Military Police Battalion spent nine months (May 2013 to February 2014) in Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, with its outstanding service soon rewarded with a Meritorious Unit Commendation.

Under state control as part of the Ohio Army National Guard at the start of 2023, the 437th Military Police Battalion is assigned to the 73rd Troop Command and is headquartered at Columbus, Ohio.
