U.S. ARMY 426TH REGIMENT UNIT CREST (DUI)

Descended from the 426th Infantry Regiment, Wisconsin Army National Guard, the 426th Regiment is tasked with the administration and operation of the Wisconsin National Guard’s Regional Training Institute at Fort McCoy. This heritage is reflected in the 426th Regiment Distinctive Unit Insignia (see below). Blue and white (silver), the only colors used for the insignia, have both served as the official branch color for Infantry. A pale (vertical column) of interlaced blue and white is symbolic of the binding together of existing companies to form organize the Regiment. AETERNUS VIGILANTIS, the unit motto, is Latin for “Forever Watching.”

The insignia was originally approved fore the 426th Regiment Infantry on 30 July 1953. It was amended for the 426th Infantry Regiment, Wisconsin Army National Guard on 20 November 1953 and was rescinded on 29 September 1976. On 25 March 1998, the insignia was authorized for the 426th Regiment, Wisconsin Army National Guard with revised symbolism and description.

All of the Regiment’s units, including Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, are based at Fort McCoy. 1st Battalion is responsible for Field Artillery Training, while 2nd Battalion handles modular training. Like all Regional Training Institutes, the 426th also hosts leadership classes for Officer and Warrant Officer candidates.

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Enlisted personnel wear the insignia centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
