U.S. ARMY 423RD QUARTERMASTER BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The 423rd Quartermaster Battalion was originally constituted in the Army of the United States on 29 July 1944 as the HQ and HQ Detachment (HHD), 500th Quartermaster Battalion and activated in England. It would take part in two World War II Campaigns in Europe (Rhineland and Central Europe) before being reorganized and redesignated as HHD, 500th Quartermaster Battalion, Mobile; just two months later, the Battalion was converted and redesignated as HHD, 500th Transportation Corps Truck Battalion on 1 August 1946.

Six months elapsed before the unit was yet again converted and redesignated, this time on 1 February 1947 as the HHD, 500th Quartermaster Battalion—only to be inactivated a little under a year-and-a-half later on 20 June 1948 in Belgium. Three months later, on 28 September 1948, the unit was given a designation it would receive again more than four decades later—HHD, 423rd Quartermaster Battalion—and allotted to the Organized Reserve Corps, forerunner of today’s Army Reserve.

On 10 October 1950, the Battalion began a period of inactivation that lasted nearly a quarter-century until its redesignation (of course) and simultaneous activation as the HQ and HQ Company, 423rd Supply and Service Battalion at Albuquerque, New Mexico on 15 January 1975, where it served under the same motto as its descendant units, "Together We Support." This activation ended a little over five years later on 16 April 1980 at Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Redesignated as the HHD, 423rd Support Battalion on 26 November 1991 and activated on 16 September 1995 at Warren, Ohio, the unit was given its current designation of HHD, 423rd Quartermaster Battalion exactly five years later on 16 September 2000. Although we know the Battalion was called into active service during the first decade of the War on Terrorism because its campaign status as of 2008 was listed as “yet to be determined,” there is unfortunately no other readily public information on any deployments it made. As of January 2023, the Battalion is either inactivated or has been converted and/or redesignated or disbanded.
