U.S. ARMY 406TH SUPPORT BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

An Army Reserve unit based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, the 406th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion (CSSB) was originally created as HQ and HQ Detachment (HHD), 175th Ordnance Battalion on 22 February 1944 and activated on 10  April 1944. Deployed to the Pacific, the unit served in the Ryukyus campaign and remained in theater until its inactivation on 15 February 1946.

Since that time, the unit has undergone several redesignations, the first on 22 September 1947 when it became the 406th Ordnance Battalion and was allotted to the Organized Reserves, forerunner of today’s Army Reserve, and assigned to Fifth United States Army. On 1 October 1952, it was redesignated as HHD, 406th Ordnance Battalion (Maintenance and Supply), a title it still held when it was authorized this Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI) in October 1967. The insignia features the unit motto, “First Without Demand,” and a tori gate that is an allusion to service on Okinawa during the Ryukyus campaign.

The unit was redesignated as the 406th Maintenance Battalion in 1968, and nearly two dozen years later its HQ and HQ Detachment was reorganized and redesignated as a HQ and HQ company in September 1990. Five years later the Battalion was reorganized and redesignated as the 406th Corps Support Battalion, with its HHC reverting back to an HHD of the new unit. It is not clear when the unit assumed the role of a Combat Sustainment Support organization rather than Corps Support, but as the 406th Support Battalion, its service in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom between September 2005 and September 2006 was recognized with a Meritorious Unit Commendation announced in January 2008.

Still allotted to the Army Reserve as of Autumn 2023, the 406th CSSB is assigned to the 645th Regional Support Group, 103rd Expeditionary Sustainment Command, 79th Theater Sustainment Command and commands eight Support Companies, all based in the state of Michigan. The Battalion is headquartered in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
