U.S. ARMY 402ND CIVIL AFFAIRS BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 402nd Civil Affairs Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia, better known as a “unit crest” or DUI, was approved on 15 January 1993. Its purple and white escutcheon employs the colors of the Civil Affairs branch, with a small gold shield emphasizing honor and high achievement in the unit’s protection of civilians while transitioning between military actions and occupation and the return of civilian government.

Similarly, the torch and sword are adapted from the Civil Affairs insignia of branch, while the quartered shield reflects the unit’s four missions: implementing civil-military cooperation, reducing civilian interference in military operations, identifying and acquiring host-nation support, and advising the commander on legal and moral considerations and obligations. The ultimate goal of all four is summed up in the unit motto, “Provide Order.”

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The history of the 402nd Civil Affairs Battalion goes back to the constitution of the 402nd Military Government Company in the Organized Reserve Corps on 22 November 1948. Activated on 1 December 1948, the Battalion was ordered into active military service at Buffalo, New York on 16 March 1951, the first of six calls of duty the Battalion would answer; it was released from this first active-duty service on 18 March 1955 and reverted back to Reserve status.

On 16 September 1992, the Battalion received its current designation when it was reorganized and redesignated as Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 402nd Civil Affairs Battalion. Over the course of its next four call-ups to active military service, the Battalion’s service would be recognized with a Navy Presidential Unit Citation (for service between 21 March 2003 and 23 April 2003), while its B Company was tapped for a Valorous Unit Award; its Streamer is embroidered DIYALA PROCINE DEC 2006-MAR 2007.

As of Autumn 2023, the 402nd Civil Affairs Battalion is based in Puerto Rico and garrisoned at Fort Buchanan as a subordinate unit of the 1st Mission Support Command, United States Army Reserve.
