U.S. ARMY 393RD REGIMENT UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 393rd Regiment Distinctive Unit insignia, better known to most Soldiers as a unit crest or DUI, was first approved for the 393rd Regiment Infantry, Organized Reserves on 5 April 1930. It was subsequently redesignated for the 393rd Regiment on 16 April 1999.

The Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

A blue shield denotes the organization’s origins in the Infantry branch, where it was reconstituted constituted in the Organized Reserves in November 1921 after it had been demobilized almost immediately (30 November 1918) after the signing of the Amristice (11/November 1918), while the white reversed pairle (upside down “Y” shape) recalls the conjunction of the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers to form the Ohio River at Pittsburgh, the unit’s original location. A castle in the center also commemorates the founding in that city: it is taken from the Pittsburgh coat of arms. “Patriotic Service” is the longtime Regimental motto.

The 393rd Infantry was called into active service on 15 November 1942 already assigned to the 99th Infantry Division. It would go on to fight in three campaigns in the European Theater and be honored with a Belgian Fourragere 1940 for being cited twice in the Order of the Day of the Belgian Army. After the war, it was inactivated on 20 September 1945 and would remain so until October 1999, a year after it had been relieved of its assignment to the 99th Infantry Division.

Redesignated on 17 October 1999 as the 393rd Regiment and reorganized to comprised three Battalions, all elements of the 75th Training Division and all concurrently allotted to the Regular Army. With the transformation of the 75th Training Division into the 75th Innovation Command, the Regiment’s Battalions were all reassigned to the 120th Infantry Brigade, where as of December 2022 they continue their Training mission at Fort Hood, Texas (renamed Fort Cavazos in May 2023).
