U.S. ARMY 391ST MILITARY POLICE BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 391st Military Police Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia was approved on 3 June 1991 and was amended to revise the description on 14 June 1991. Green and gold, official branch colors of the Military Police Corps, are the predominant tones used for the insignia. A castle tower is emblematic of the unit’s service in the Rhineland campaign of World War II and also suggests physical security, a concept further reinforced by the image of a double-warded key on the tower; the key also emphasizes the unit’s responsibility to provide administration and support for the operation of internment facilities. A pair of crossed swords creates a saltire (“x” shape) oriented with points down to represent the nonbelligerent nature of the Battalion’s security mission. "Dignity And Honor" is the Battalion motto.

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam.  More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

A unit in the United States Army Reserve, the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 391st Military Police Battalion is currently (Autumn 2023) assigned to the 300th Military Police Brigade, 200th Military Police Command and is headquartered in Columbus, Ohio, its home location since it was activated on 17 September 1990. Constituted under its current designation of 391st MP Battalion in the Army of the United States on 28 October 1944, the Battalion served in the Rhineland campaign in the European Theater during World War before it was inactivated in England on 12 November 1945.

Some fifteen months later, the Battalion activated on 6 March 1947 with its Headquarters at Cleveland, Ohio and was allotted to the Organized Reserves (redesignated as Organized Reserve Corps in March 1948 and then Army Reserve in July 1952). It was ordered into active military service in October 1950 at Cleveland and was subsequently inactivated on 1 June 1952 at Fort Meade, Maryland. A brief period of activation was quickly followed by inactivation on 16 May 1955 at Zanesville Ohio, the start of a thirty-five-year dormant period ending with its activation in Columbus in 1990.

The Headquarters and Headquarters Company (HHC), 391st Military Police Battalion has been ordered into active military service at its home station of Columbus, Ohio on three occasions. Although it’s yet to be determined if the unit will be credited with participation in any campaigns in the War on Terrorism, the Battalion’s HHC was awarded a Meritorious Unit Commendation for its superior performance in force protection and detainee operations at Forward Operating Base Abu Ghraib during its second deployment to Iraq. The Battalion also received a bit of Hollywood fame when twenty-five its personnel were used during the climactic attack on New York City in the movie The Avengers.
