U.S. ARMY 378TH REGIMENT DISTINCTIVE UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 378th Regiment Distinctive Unit Insignia, better known as a “unit crest” or by the initialism DUI, was first approved for the 378th Infantry Regiment on 28 May 1927. Redesignated for the 378th Regiment on 30 January 1962, the insignia was amended on 13 April 1970 revise the symbolism. The blue background used for both the shield and scroll portions of the insignia commemorate the organization’s origins in the Infantry branch, while the tepees (The Institute of Heraldry refers to them as “wigwams”) represent what has been known as the “Five Civilized Tribes” and, more recently, the Five Tribes of Oklahoma: Choctaw, Cherokee, Creek, Chickasaw, and Seminole. Oklahoma was the first domain to which the Regiment was allocated in 1921. “HIKIA KALLO” is a Choctaw phrase meaning, “Stand Firm.”

You can find guidance on wear of the DUI DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The 378th Regiment was first constituted as the 378th Infantry in the National Army on 4 September 1918 and assigned to the 95th Division. It was reconstituted with the same title and parent organization, the 95th Infantry Division, in January 1922 with its Headquarters at McAlester, Oklahoma. During World War II, the Regiment would take part in five campaigns in the European Theater, with its 2nd Battalion selected for a Presidential Unit Citation and a French Croix de Guerre with Palm.

In April 1959, the Regiment would assume its mission as a Training organization when it was reorganized and redesignated as the 378th Regiment, an element of the 95th Division (Training), with its HQ at Oklahoma City. It would undergo numerous reorganizations (primarily to reflect the changes in the 95th Division’s official designation), but from 1967 forward it typically comprised three Battalions (1st, 2nd, 3rd).

Today, the Regiment is still a part of the United States Army Reserve, with units from its 1st Battalion assigned to the 1st Brigade, 95th Training Division (stationed at Norman, Oklahoma) and 1st Brigade, 98th Training Division (Lafayette, Louisiana), both of the 108th Training Command. 2nd Battalion (and some units from the 1st Battalion) is assigned to the 1st Brigade, 91st Training Division, 84th Training Command and is stationed at Salt Lake City.
