U.S. ARMY 356TH REGIMENT UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 356th Regiment Distinctive Unit Insigni was originally approved on 7 May 1928 and was redesignated for the 356th Regiment on 30 January 1962. Its blue shield is augmented with gold; blue is the color of infantry, and gold is the tincture of the shield from the coat of arms of the ancient province of Lorraine, the location where the Regiment served in World War I. A fleur-de-lis also commemorates that service.

The two piles (triangular shapes with point down) have been reversed and given concave sides to suggest the “Middlewest” Division, the nickname it was given during World War I. A blazing sun is taken from the flag of South Dakota to symbolize the Regiment’s reconstitution in that state after the unit’s demobilization following World War I (South Dakota is sometimes referred to as the “Sunshine State”). The unit motto, BOUTEZ EN AVANT, is French for “Push Forward.”

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

Originally constituted as the 356th Infantry in the National Army on 5 August 1917, the Regiment was assigned to the 89th Division and fought in three World War I campaigns—St. Mihiel, Meuse-Argonne, Lorraine 1918—before returning stateside for demobilization in 1919. Reconstituted in the Organized Reserves with the same designation and again assigned to the 89th Division, the Regiment was relieved from that assignment in February 1942; it was concurrently withdrawn from the Organized Reserves, allotted to the Regular Army as an inactive unit, and then disbanded in November 1944.

Fifteen years later, the unit was reconstituted in the Army Reserve as the 356th Regiment on 12 June 1959 and activated as an element of the 89th Division (Training) on 1 October 1959. It would be reorganized (just altering the number of Battalions it had) four times between then and 1975 when its only Battalion, the 3rd, was inactivated and relieved from assignment to the 89th Division.

In 1999, the Regiment was reorganized to consist of three Battalions (1st, 2nd, 3rd) , all elements of the 91st Division (Training Support). Since that time, the Battalions have been designated as Logistical Support Battalions assigned to support Brigades under the command of First Army Division West. As of Autumn 2023, 1st Battalion is assigned to the 189th Combined Arms Training Brigade, 2nd Battalion to the 5th Armored Brigade, and 3rd Battalion to the 120th Infantry Brigade; the status of the 2nd Battalion, 356th Regiment is unclear.
