U.S. ARMY 329TH REGIMENT UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 329th Regiment Distinctive Unit Crest, also called a DUI or unit crest, was originally approved for the 329th Infantry Regiment on 7 May 1927 and was redesignated for the 329th Regiment on 22 August 1960. Its shield features a black pile (wedge) on a white background; white is the old branch color for Infantry, while the pile is from the Shoulder Sleeve Insignia of the 83rd Division with which the Regiment served in two World Wars; the gold fleur-de-lis denotes the organization’s service in France. “Nous Gardons,” the unit motto, is French for “We Guard.”

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

Constituted on 5 August 1917 as the 329th Infantry in the National Army and assigned to the 83rd Division, the 329th Regiment has a history comprised of two distinct periods. From 1917 through the second World War, the Regiment was an Infantry unit that served in France and Europe during World Wars I and II, earning an uninscribed World War I Victory streamer five World War II battle honors (Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace, and Central Europe) and a Presidential Unit Citation.

In March 1952, the Regiment was relieved from assignment to the 83rd Infantry Division and assigned to the 70th Infantry Division. When the 70th ID was organized as a the 70th Division (Training) in 1959, the 329th was also reorganized that so it (and subsequently its component units) were elements of the Division. This structure remained in place until October 1996 when the Regiment was reorganized to consist of two Battalions, the 1st and 2nd, that were elements of the 84th Division (Training). In October 2004, the Regiment underwent another major reorganization that left its number of Battalions unchanged but made them elements of the 100th Division (Institutional Training).

But that arrangement too went by the wayside, and as of October 2023 the 1st Battalion (1-329 BN) is assigned to the 2nd Brigade, 86th Training Division, 84th Training Command. The status of the 2nd Battalion is unclear at this time.
