U.S. ARMY 112TH MEDICAL BRIGADE PATCH (SSI)

The 112th Medical Brigade was originally created as the Medical Department, Ohio National Guard on 1 January 1904. During World War I, it was assigned to the 37th Division as the 112th Sanitary Train, earning credit for participation in three campaigns before returning home and demobilizing in 1919.

In World War II, the unit was redesignated as the 112th Medical Battalion and again assigned to the 37th Division, which was deployed to the Pacific Theater of Operations. The Battalion took part in two campaigns, the Northern Solomons and Luzon, earning an Arrowhead device for taking part in an assault landing in the latter. Its service was also recognized with a Meritorious Unit Commendation and a Philippine Presidential Unit Citation.

In 1977, the unit received its final designation as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 112th Medical Brigade, and three years later it became the first Army National Guard medical unit to take part in overseas deployment training. For two weeks in September 1980, 30 of the Brigade’s HHC participated in the CERTAIN LANCER exercise, part of the annual REFORGER exercises conducted in Germany throughout the 1970s and 1980s.

The 112th Medical Brigade Shoulder Sleeve Insignia features a cross—symbol of medical care—shaded in the Army Medical Department colors of Maroon and white, extending throughout the insignia to indicate the authority of its headquarters. Maroon shading on the left of the cross forms a directional arrow that suggests personnel flowing from forward combat areas back to the medical-care facility. The overall wedge shape of the insignia is an allusion to the state flag of Ohio.

The 112th Medical Brigade unit patch was approved on 6 October 1976 and the Brigade was permanently inactivated in November 1977.
