Male ASU Coast Upper Left Chest (Medals/Ribbons, Badges, Tabs)
Three types of devices may be worn in the area above the left breast pocket of the male Army Service Uniform (ASU) coat—medals/ribbons, badges, and tabs—but regulations prohibit all four types being worn at the same time (ribbons may not be worn with medals

Full-sized medals: Henceforward we will refer to "medals" since miniature medals may not be worn on the ASU. Here are the basic rules and guidelines for the wear of medals on the ASU:
  • Medals are worn in order of precedence from the wearer’s right to left in each row, as well as from top to bottom when wearing multiple rows, i.e., the highest precedence medal will be always be at the wearer's right in the topmost row.  The first row is centered immediately above the breast pocket, and subsequent higher rows are spaced 1/8-inch apart.
  • Rows must contain at least three and no more than four medals, and they may not overlap; the actual number for a row is based upon coat size and lapel position.
  • Medals on higher rows are positioned so that medal pendants on rows below are visible.
  • The first two rows will have the same number of medals (three or four) before starting a third row; second and subsequent rows can never have more medals than the row below; and the top row is always centered on the row immediately below it.
  • Service and training ribbons may not be worn with medals.
Service ribbons: Ribbons follow the same set of rules with these exceptions:
  • The first row is centered 1/8-inch above the breast pocket (medals are placed "immediately above" the pocket).
  • The top row may be centered or aligned to the wearer's left depending upon which configuration offers the best appearance.
Combat badges/Special skill badges/Skill tab metal replicas: No more than three of these devices may be worn at one time above medals or ribbons. The combination of badges and tab metal replicas permitted depends up whether medals or ribbons are being worn.
