Army service stripes are worn on the lower left sleeve of the male Enlisted Army Service Uniform (ASU) coat, overseas service bars are worn on the lower right sleeve by Officers and Enlisted personnel, and gold ornamental braid is worn near the bottom of both sleeves. Learn more.

Male Officers and Enlisted Soldiers wear gold ornamental braid near the bottom of both sleeves of the Army Service Uniform coat and overseas service bars on the lower half of the right sleeve. Only Enlisted Soliders are authorized to wear service stripes on the lower half of the left sleeve.

Ornamental Braid: All sleeve braids are positioned so that the bottom of the braid is parallel to and three inches from the bottom of the sleeve.
  • General Officers wear a 1 1/2-inch braid.
  • All other Officers wear a 3/4 inch braid made of two 1/4-inch gold braids placed 1/4-inch apart on silk material of the first-named color of their basic branch.
  • Enlisted Soldiers wear a 1/8-inch soutache braid.
Overseas Service Bars: Overseas service bars are sewn centered on the outside bottom half of the right sleeve parallel to the sleeve’s bottom. Each new bar is placed parallel to and 1/16-inch above the bar below it.
  • Officers place the first bar so that its lower edge is 1/4-inch above the sleeve braid.
  • Enlisted Soldiers position the first bar so its lower edge is four inches from the bottom of the sleeve.
  • Each new bar is placed parallel to and 1/16-inch above the bar below it.
Service Stripes: These are centered on the bottom half of the left sleeve.
  • Stripes are sewn on at 45-degree angle, with the lower end pointing toward the sleeve's inside seam
  • The bottom of the first stripe should be four inches from the bottom of the sleeve. Additional stripes are space 1/16-inch above and parallel to the stripe below it.
  • The size of the stripe (large or small) must match the size of the nonsubdued, sew-on grade insignia, i.e., chevrons.
